UbiNetics test upgrade set to speed HSDPA 3G rollout
LONDON — HSDPA specialist Telecoms test gear specialist UbiNetics has
extended the range of its HSDPA tester, the original version of which the
Cambridge, England based company developed in close collaboration with
Japanese 3G network operator NTT DoCoMo.

The latest addition to the TM500 HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access)
Test Mobile, incorporating the Multi-UE option, allows a single test set to
concurrently emulate up to 32 individual mobiles, each with an
individually-programmable channel model to provide representative RF
conditions.
Several TM500s can be connected together to simulate over 100 mobiles in one
HSDPA cell.
The tester is targeted at Node B infrastructure manufacturers and
operators to stress test early HSDPA networks before commercial roll-out.
"We have supplied the TM500 to almost all manufacturers developing a Node B
for the very high speed down link version of 3G, and hope to sell this
upgrade to them as well. The Multi-UE option, which uses the spare capacity
we had in the 500 platform, is mainly a software upgrade and is purely a
UbiNetics development," said Philip Windred, senior vice president for test
and measurement products at the company.

optimises the use of available power and bandwidth by varying the
transmission to mobile phones depending on individual channel conditions.
Overall performance is critically reliant on networks making fast and
accurate decisions on which mobile to serve at any particular time, based on
channel quality metrics returned by the mobiles," added Windred.
The upgrade will allow Node B developers and network providers to
evaluate and optimise the scheduler function within the network, "and thus
contribute to the success of engineer HSDPA specialist."
The extension to the TM500 will be shipping by the end of the year.
Windred says engineer HSDPA specialistnow has a real momentum behind it with many
carriers specifying it in their latest third generation orders from the
infrastructure providers. He points to the recent deal between Lucent and Cingular for 3G trials that will incorporate the high-speed downlink version

However, he concurs that HSDPA specialist may not be commercially available
until 2006 at the earliest as handset makers are behind the curve in
